Flash of Genius
Flash of Genius (2008)
Based on the true story of college professor and part-time inventor Robert Kearns’ (Greg Kinnear) long battle with the American automobile industry, Flash of Genius tells the tale of one man whose fight to receive recognition for his ingenuity would come at a heavy price. But this determined engineer refused to be silenced, and he took on the corporate titans in a battle that nobody thought he could win. And while paying the toll for refusing to compromise his dignity, this everyday David tried the unthinkable: to bring Goliath to his knees.
The Man and His Dream is one of the most underrated performances of all time, starring one of the most underrated actors of all time in Jeff Bridges. The little guy screwed over by the big corporation genre has never been better. This fall though, Greg Kinnear is going to try his hand at it, by taking on the same people Jeff Bridges did: America’s greedy car manufacturers. Come on, you know they’re evil.Kinnear is starring in Flash of Genius, the story of the guy who invented the intermittent wipers you now have on your car (and take for granted), only to have them stolen from him by the fat cats at the Ford Motor Company. The film follows him decade after decade as he fights and fails to get Ford to admit the invention was his.

The Duchess
The Duchess (2008)
In 1774 Georgiana Cavendish (Knightley) marries the sullen Duke Of Devonshire (Fiennes) with the sole purpose of providing him a male heir. The Duke, angered at his wife’s inability to fulfil her wifely duties -- she gives him two daughters -- embarks on an affair with Georgiana’s only friend Bess (Atwell), an open secret in their stately home. While putting up with that daily humiliation, Georgiana indulges in a dalliance of her own with Mr. Grey (Cooper), an aspiring Tory, but is forced to choose between her own happiness and the happiness of her children.
Popular with the people and known as the ‘Empress of fashion,’ it’s impossible to escape the Princess Diana allegory running through Saul Dibb’s film -- the only thing missing is her death in a carriage collision. Adapted from Amanda Foreman’s novel, it will appeal to those who love their period dramas (the locations on show are at times breathtaking) and although the audience this drama is pitched at will have seen better, it’s a solid film. Knightley might be front and centre and shows again that she’s not just a pretty face, but it’s Fiennes, hamstrung by a small if formidable role, that seems to do more than his co-star and acts her off the screen whenever the two are together; thankfully for Knightley it’s not that often.

Man on Wire (2008)
Man on Wire (2008)
MAN ON WIRE tells the story of a truly inspiring figure. In the early 1970s, a fiery young Frenchman named Philippe Petit wanted to shake up the world. When he saw the World Trade Center being built in New York City, he found his mission. Petit was a trained high wire walker, and his goal was to set up a wire between the two towers and give the world a show it could never have expected. As is often the case with these endeavors, the actual high-wire walking was the easiest part of the plan. For nearly seven years, Petit worked on the project, recruiting associates who supported him every step of the way. Finally, after eight months in New York, the day came when Petit and his cronies jumped into action. This wasn’t easy. They had to find a way to sneak past security and make their way to the top of the towers with heavy equipment, at which point they had to battle the elements to install the wire. After many close scares, the time came for Petit to realize his dream--and the rest, as they say, is history. Marsh crafts MAN ON WIRE like a heist film, presenting rare and fascinating footage of the actual event alongside flawless reenactments and modern-day interviews with the participants. The result is an immersive, emotionally gratifying motion picture, made all the more stimulating by Michael Nyman’s electrifying score.
